Preventing default criminal justice system involvement when the primary reason for a 911 call is an unmet behavioral health need is an important public safety issue. A collaborative effort between the Task Force Concerning the Treatment of Persons with Behavioral Health Disorders in the Criminal and Juvenile Justice Systems (BHDCJS), Colorado’s Division of Criminal Justice, the Colorado 911 Resource Center, 911 emergency communication center directors, crisis services administrators, emergency responders, advocacy organizations, and other state and local stakeholders with funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) under the Connect and Protect program was developed to increase the implementation of alternative responses. The goal is to create accessible and informative web-based tools for individuals and organizations interested in learning about or implementing alternative response models.
